While driving on Friday (all of the best conversations seem to happen in the car), Hudson and I were discussing all of the fun things he will be able to do when he gets older. We talked about how he will be able to drive and how he will be able to go to work. Then I asked him where he wants to live when he grows up:
He said "with Mommy and Daddy"
Expecting this answer, I asked him if he wants to get married. He [a little embarrassed] exclaimed, "No Mommy!"
Do you want to have kids? After thinking for a few seconds, he replied, "I know, Mommy! You, me, Luke and Daddy can all have a baby together!"
I didn't quite expect this answer, "Maybe someday bud, we can have a baby."
That wasn't good enough... "Mommy, can we go ask someone if we can have their baby. Maybe someone will let us have theirs."
"No honey, everyone loves their babies and wants to keep them." Confused, Hudson asked, "Well then how are we going to get a baby?"
I responded, that one day maybe Jesus will put a baby in Mommy's belly. "What?!!" Hudson laughs. Evidentially he didn't remember Luke being in my belly, and he didn't like the idea of a baby in "our bellies". So he responded, "No Mommy, we need to get a baby and not keep it in our bellies!"
Trying to change the subject, I asked him if he wants a girl baby or a boy baby... "A boy baby!"
"You don't want a sister? You already have a really cool brother?"
"I have an idea Mommy! Why don't we get one girl baby and one boy baby, ok? I want to do that, Mommy!"
"I don't think we're going to have two babies, Hudson. Two babies is a lot of work, and we want to be able to spend a lot of time with you and Luke like we do now."
"But Mommy! I want two babies, one boy and one girl!"
Hudson had been talking about it all day- "We need to get two cribs for our babies and two highchairs!" I continued to remind him that we aren't going to be getting a baby right now, but MAYBE a long time away (after he turns 5 and Luke turns 4) we can have a baby (only ONE baby). Sure enough, he asked Matthew when he got home. "Daddy! Can we get a boy baby and a girl baby? Mommy said we can!"
Laughing, I intervened, "Now Hudson I never said we can. I actually said we probably won't be able to have two babies, and if we do have a baby it will be a while from now."
Hudson was not happy with that answer and knowing that Daddy can sometimes be a softy and give him what he wants, he asked him again... "Daddy, can you please go right now and get us two babies. Don't forget to get two cribs and two highchairs. Can you bring them home tonight please?"
I responded to Hudson, "Where is he going to get those babies? If you want a baby, you need to pray for one, and MAYBE one day Jesus will create a special little baby just for our family, and he will put that baby in Mommy's belly to grow a little. After the baby has grown some and is ready, it will come out into the world to be with our family."
Not really knowing where to go from there, Hudson was [finally] satisfied with my answer. "Ok, I will do that."
Phew!
